Family portraits

Our 2nd graders created these wonderful portraits using watercolor paints.  They practiced their composition first on scrap paper so they could get the positions of everyone just right. The students noticed that there wasn't a skin tone color in their watercolor palette, so we learned how to mix all types of different skin tones as everyone's skin color is all different.  Aren't they just adorable!  Do you recognize anyone?

Monet Lilly Pond

This lesson started with a video of the artist Claude Monet.  Students learned that his style of painting is called impressionism.  Monet's style of art was not accepted easily at first because the style of the times was Renaissance art, which was realistic, used dark colors, and most always told a story.  Through perseverance and not listening to his critics, his artwork flourished.

The students painted by using large "dots" of paint on their papers. When looked at from a distance the viewers’ eyes blend the dots to give us the "impression" of objects.
